:: Heparin
|
HEPARIN - In February 2008, Baxter International, the primary manufacturer of Heparin in the United States, recalled all of its Heparin products after pressure from the FDA. The FDA believed that at the time at least 400 life threatening reactions and as many as 25 deaths were caused by Baxter's Heparin products.
Heparin is a very popular blood thinner used in surgery and dialysis and thus a big money maker for Baxter. Baxter was aware of the manufacturing defects that caused their Heparin products to cause serious and often fatal reactions, but they were slow to react essentially standing by as more and more people were hurt by their defective drug.
They not only left the drug in circulation longer than it should have been once they were aware of the defects, but they never once inspected their foreign manufacturer's facility to ensure that the drug was being made to specification. It turns out that their foreign manufacturer was not following the necessary procedures nor taking the necessary safety precautions in order to make sure that contaminents don't infuse the drug. Baxter's failure to regulate their foreign manufacturer caused tens of thousands of people to come in contact with a dangerous and defective drug.
Patients that have been given the contaminated Heparin have reported experiencing generalized or localized sensations of warmth, numbness or tingling of the extremities, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, audible wheezing, chest tightness, low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, drug ineffectiveness, dyspepsia, dyspnea, erythema, flushing, headache, hyperhidrosis, hypoesthesia, hypotension, loss of consciousness, malaise, pallor, palpitations, paresthesia, pharyngeal edema, restlessness, tachycardia, and unresponsiveness to stimuli.
The negligence exhibited by Baxter has led thousands of innocent people to experience these serious and often fatal reactions. We intend to hold them accountable for their reckless behavior.
