Medical Malpractice :: Lasik Injuries

LASIK INJURIES - Lasik surgery has become increasingly popular over the past decade leading a lot of inexperienced and/or unlicensed opportunists to try and make a quick buck. Although the vast majority of patients rate their surgery a success, as high as 92%, those that have a poor outcome are often left with vision problems that severely impact their lives. And these complications are rarely able to be fixed by further surgery or eyeglasses.

Not everyone should have Lasik surgery, but patients are rarely made aware of this fact. For instance, those with refractive instabiliy, large pupils, or dry eyes should shy away from Lasik. Those with HIV or diabetes are also at a higher risk for complications resulting from Lasik surgery. Unfortunately, the risks these preconditions pose are sometimes never voiced by the surgeon.

Any complications that result from Lasik surgery could certainly be because of a prexisting condition, but there is also the possibility of negligence by the surgeon or a defect in the equipment used. All too often we have seen surgeons cause serious injuries to those that trusted them with a very serious operation by using an unapproved laser (also known as a black box laser) and other unapproved devices. The FDA doesn't monitor this, and only performs safety checks when a complaint is issued.

Some of the serious complications that may result include:

  • Dry eyes (more than 6 months from surgery)
  • Overcorrection or undercorrection
  • Blurry vision
  • Halos or starbursts
  • Light sensitivity
  • Ghost images or double vision
  • Decreased night vision
  • Floaters
  • Debris or growth under flap
  • Thin or buttonhole flop
If you or a loved one suffer from any of the above complications, or have any other side effects from your Lasik surgery, you may be entitled to compensation.  It is essential that you contact a Lasik malpractice lawyer that knows how to approach and litigate the case.  A qualified Lasik lawyer will make a difference.  These cases are expensive to litigate and require an experienced Lasik attorney if you want to get the results you deserve.
