Unsafe Drugs :: Trasylol

TRASYLOL – Trasylol (a.k.a. aprotinin) is a drug that was administered in almost 40% of heart surgery procedures from when it was introduced in 1993 to when it was finally pulled off the market by drug manufacturer Bayer Pharmaceuticals in November 2007.  A Public Health Advisory was issued by the FDA instructing doctors to limit the use of Trasylol when it was discovered that individuals given the drug during heart surgery suffered from a higher risk of kidney problems, heart attacks, and strokes afterwards.

It was subsequently given a black box warning by the FDA in September 2006 meaning that it should only be used when the patient was at a significant risk of blood loss during surgery.  The FDA finally made Bayer recall the drug in November 2007 when findings were published that speculated the number of people killed by the drug was in the tens of thousands.

It has been shown in clinical studies and previous lawsuits that Trasylol increases the risk of death after heart surgery by as much as 65%.  Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the increased risk that Trasylol poses.  If a family member dies after heart surgery the family is probably led to believe that the death was unavoidable and a risk that one takes with heart surgery.

However, in most of the cases we have seen, the death could have been avoided if Trasylol wasn't administered.

Bayer was well aware of the risks that Trasylol poses, but they decided to put profit first.  They were slow to react and are duly negligent.

Unsafe drug cases are complex and costly to litigate. Experienced representation is essential, and that is exactly what we help provide. If you or a loved one underwent heart surgery or by-pass surgery and suffered a serious complication that may have been a result of Trasylol, please fill out the form below for a free evaluation.
